Mission: Vietnam

Helping to improve patient care in the country's emerging medical programs.

Medical Missions

Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy is responsible for providing training all doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists for central Vietnam and the highlands of Laos. The population served is a approximately 20 million people. The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Hue has four neurosurgical faculty and six residents (all working on M.D. Ph.D. degrees) as well as rotations of general surgery residents. Prior to the collaboration with AMCANI, the department had access only to hand powered instruments for cranial surgery. It had no operative microscope or microsurgical instruments, so many patients needed to travel to facilities in Hanoi or to Ho Chi Minh City. Both are approximately 1000 miles away. While there, the patient would be without family support, as the majority of patients at Hue Medical College are from the rural areas and are impoverished. AMCANI has now expanded its work at Hue University to include training in the Departments of Vascular Surgery, Rehabilitation, Nurse Instruction, OBYGYN, and Anesthesia. Many of these Departments faced the same shortages that neurosurgery did some 12 years ago when AMCANI started to work with them. We believe we can uplift these departments in a similar fashion with the appropriate support

Future Work

Even though we have made so much progress, there's more to be done! To further this work, we are seeking material and financial support. Please click on “Donate” below to contribute today. Funds are needed to cover the shipping cost of materials, travel funds for physician and ancillary personnel teams who train the department. All donations are tax deductible as AMCANI is an IRS 501(c)3.

Past and Current Sponsors include Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Kaiser Health Plan, Medtronic Inc., Sydney and Ellen Shapiro, Synthesis Corporation, Alan Heit DDS Inc., Eli Lilly and Company, The Permanente Medical Group, Marquette University Jesuit Associates, Merck Inc., Source Surgical Supplies Inc., and Wexler Surgical Instruments.

I Want to Make a Difference!

For every $4,000 we raise, we are able to ship a 40-foot cargo container full of desperately needed medical equipment to our mission sites in Vietnam & Myanmar.

Our volunteer medical teams train the local practitioners to use the donated equipment, but we need your help to get it there!
